Madonna and Child Window

One of the fantastic aspects of the internet for me is viewing many beautiful artworks, famous and not, that I would otherwise never be able to see.  A given concept, for example, "Madonna and Child", can be executed in thousands of ways.  An artist chooses the style, the lines, the colors and textures, the composition, the details, embellishments or simplifications, and the medium the work is created in - paint, sculpture, glass, fabric, etc.  These decisions are part of the joys of being an artist.

My mother-in-law Marion Grisa created this glowing yet extremely simplified Madonna and Child stained glass window in the early 1980's.  The spare and simple lines she chose were part of her style at that time.  I am sure she carefully considered every line and placement, and I know she enjoyed picking out the textured glasses and colors, tiny trapped bubbles and all.

The resulting window she created is a cherished family heirloom that I display in my house every Christmas.  The window's dimensions are about 16 inches by 21.5 inches, and the glowing colors remind me of the reason for the season.

Marion Grisa (1925-1986) was a talented artist in many mediums, including stained glass.  She designed and made the stained glass windows for an entire  church, Heritage Presbyterian Church, in Muskego, Wisconsin.  She also created smaller windows, including this Madonna "Mother and Child" windowAnother of Marion's windows, an Angel, is shown here.

Vintage Floral Bling

Trifari Floral Pin Brooch
Image 1: Trifari Pin in Spring colors

I haven't shared any bling and jewels on my blog recently.  If you are familiar with my blog, you probably know  I collect china.  I have collected china for a couple of years, but I have collected costume jewelry for a couple of decades, long before I collected china.  So today I thought I would share a trio of colorful pins (brooches) I own.

Image 2: Trifari Pin in Summer colors

These three pins are the same pin design, executed in different metal finishes and 'colorways' of rhinestones.  (Colorways are arrangements of colors.)   Each pin is over 3 inches (8 cm) long end to end.

I especially like the three colorways of this pattern that I own.  I look at them and see a spring, summer and fall execution of this design.

I have occasionally bid on a "winter" version of this design - an all white rhinestone colorway, but I haven't managed to win the bid on Ebay; and truthfully, I have been avoiding Ebay, because it is too easy to spend too much money there, and too fast.  I spend less at rummage sales, and there are no shipping fees.   Trifari booches, at one pin for $10-$30 (or more), are not nearly as affordable as china plates for $1-$5 each.   Hence my newer hobby is collecting china.  :)

Image 4: These pins are large!  Showing the scale

These booches were manufactured by the Trifari jewelry company, probably in the 1950's.  When I first was collecting costume jewelry I probably wouldn't have selected these pins, because they are so bright and flashy that they in no way pretend to be "real".  Now, though, I love them for the totally intense sparkle they give off.

I always find myself wishing the pictures could show you what I see when I look at them.  I work to get the colors right, but somehow the real pieces of jewelry are much more stunning then the pictures show.  Each pin is very dimensional - the two flowers are mounted over the foliage.   Maybe I will take some more photos to document them, but for now I think I will just send off this post.

Angel Window

Angel stained glass window by Marion Grisa
Angel Stained Glass Window by Marion Grisa

Today I wanted to share my favorite Angel stained glass window.  This blue angel window measures about 16 inches by 24 inches and was created in the early 1980's by my husband's mother, Marion Grisa

Glass Detail
Marion Grisa (1925 - 1986), was a artist in many mediums, including fiber, stained glass, painting and sculpture.  I don't actually know how many stained glass windows she made, but she made at least nine stained glass windows for Heritage Presbyterian Church in Muskego, Wisconsin, as well as at least two other smaller windows.  The two small windows she gave as gifts, one to her mother and one to her cousin.  These small windows have traveled on as family heirlooms, one to my husband, Carl Grisa.

Angel stained glass window by Marion GrisaThis Christmas I hung the angel window in my living room window for the Christmas season.  After the holidays are over, I think I will move the Angel window to somewhere more permanent, probably in the dining room.  I'm pretty sure I've decided that this little angel should shine on for more then just the holidays.

(How is this a Metamorphis Monday post?  This window was taken out of storage and hasn't hung in the house for years.  I was worried the children might break it.  I think that counts...)

Christmas Tree Pins

vintage costume jewelry Christmas tree pins
Today's photo mosaic was created with some of my costume jewelry Christmas tree pins.   Most of these pins are probably the 1950's or 1960's, although a couple are much newer.

The one above is probably my current favorite.  It is unsigned.

This one is a contemporary pin from the last decade or so.  I think my Dad gave each of my sisters and my mom this same tree pin.
