Valentine Love Vignette

I love the colors of Valentines day, where one can joyfully decorate with both pink and red.   During February I can add accents of these colors that don't typically exist in my decorating scheme.

Today I want to share this small Valentine Love vignette consisting of a shelf with vintage glass and a Love sign.
Red Button Love Sign by Jeanne Selep

Red Button Repurposed Love Sign
I created the Button Love sign from a rummage sale find.  The sign had some phrase on the border (under the buttons), about grandparents, I think.

The sentiment didn't apply to me, but covered with buttons, the sign becomes a colorful multi-seasonal, multi-use sign.  I put my button Love sign out for both Christmas and Valentines Day.

Another thing I
 is Glass.

Vintage Cranberry Valentine Glass
Vintage Glass in Valentine Colors
I arranged some small pink, cranberry, red and white glass from my growing collection with some candlesticks.  (I can't resist vintage glassware when I see it at a great price.)

Spread the
Love on

Valentines Day!

OK, the cutesy playing with letters is silly,
but it's like many valentines.
Silly yet Fun.
I hope you enjoy Valentine's Day,
this is my Valentine to you.

Mosaic Birds

Picassiette Mosaic Birds by Jeanne Selep
Teal Picassiette Mosaic birds

I wanted to share this pair of mosaic birds I created using vintage china from various resale venues. Mosaics created from broken china is called picassiette (also pique assiette), and it's my favorite kind of mosaic.  It's a great way to use chipped, damaged or broken china.

The single teal plate that became the tail feathers inspired the color palette.  I cut the bird shapes out of 1/4 inch thick wood on a jigsaw, glued down the china pieces with clear silicon, and finished the birds by grouting between the china.

I don't know which of the birds is the girl and which one is the boy, but these two are definitely love birds, and I am hoping to figure out a baby bird shape so they can have babies someday.

Here the two are having their close up.

The birds are actually quite small, about 3 inches high by 5 inches tip of the beak to tip of the tail.

Small Mosaic bird and Window

At the moment I display them on a window ledge near a small reproduction Tiffany Window that came from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the real much larger window hangs. The large Tiffany window (the real one) is currently my favorite stained glass window in the world, in case anyone has a spare one...
(btw, notice the authentic shabby chic (?) of the window and window handle...)

I haven't named the birds yet, so if anyone has suggestions, please leave your ideas in the comments.

Encouraging Others with Mixed Media

Mixed Media art quote Goal without plan is just a wish
"A goal without a plan is just a wish" Mixed Media Art Quote
Parenting is a funny career.  You can be active at it for years, competent even (hopefully), and realize you still don't know what your doing; for example when the kids go to off to college, and call to share their woes.  (I don't understand the professor, I think I bombed the test, everyone else is so smart, I didn't get an A, should I apply for this job, ...)

Winston Churchill success Quote Mixed Media art by Jeanne Selep
Winston Churchhill Success Quote - Mixed Media

My parenting dilemmas changed when my teens went to college, and included trying to advise my young adults from a distance.  In this previous post I mentioned I was creating art journal pages with quotes to inspire and encourage them.

Success is not final Quote

Occasionally I take a photo of a multi-media work and send it to their phone when I think it will encourage them in a particular situation.  (my own phone "Stickers")
Talent Quote
Talent and Perseverance quote, misspelled!

I don't know if they appreciate it, but words of wisdom from sources I respect shouldn't hurt.  And I have the fun of creating art in the process as I try to help them.

The rest of this post documents progress and perseverance [spelled correctly this time!], for others on the art journey.  I'm trying to encourage others* to say "I can become more talented if I practice" instead of saying "I can't do that".

(*AND my young adults, should they ever read this)

practicing hand Lettering
Practicing Hand Lettering
I have worked over the past 2 years to improve my handwriting and journaling, by taking courses and workshops.  But improvement frequently comes down to practice.  I practiced what I learned, which is the way to really improve.  Classes are not enough.

Hand Lettering practice idea
Hand Lettering practice idea
One technique I have used to improve my "hand" is copying over lettering samples I like with vellum paper. It helps with learning to form letters in a very different way.  After I copy exactly, I try it in a smaller format, or with a different phrase.

Creating Journal Papers
Creating mixed media Journal Papers

Besides practicing lettering, I practice creativity when I create the backgrounds for my quotes.  Practicing creativity is easier and more fun - less rules.

Creating mixed media background journal papers
Creating mixed media papers
Creating the backgrounds takes more time, space, and is far messier than calligraphy practice.   I have practiced my calligraphy on plane flights on tiny airline trays.  I also practice during commercials while watching TV.  Creating my backgrounds can take over my kitchen, dining room and living room for nearly a day.

Creating Journal Papers
mixed media Journal Papers drying
I often create backgrounds by applying paint over wallpaper samples, using stenciling, stamping and other techniques.
Da Vinci Quote Art is never finished mixed media

I make many of my quote pages 5x7inches so that they could be framed in the future should one of my children want to.

Feel free to snap a photo of my quote journal pages to encourage your children or friends.

I hope I have encouraged you to keep up your efforts and projects, whatever they may be - blogging, artistic endeavors, getting a job, raising children, dealing with self doubts, etc!
