Art in Bloom 2013

For the moms out there, here are some Mother's Day flowers for you to enjoy...

The Milwaukee Art Museum holds a show each spring called Art In Bloom.  It is one of my favorite events in the spring. Art in Bloom is held mid-April, before spring really starts in Milwaukee, so viewers get to enjoy flowers and greens before they are appearing outside.  (I also get to enjoy flowers that will not be appearing outside, like the orchids in the arrangement below.)

At Art in Bloom, selected art works in the museum are interpreted by area florists, many of whom are competing for view choice awards. Some of the arrangements are stunningly beautiful, and some are more abstract. There were over 45 arrangements in this year's show (2013) show.

It fun to see the floral designer's work, the "state of the art" design concepts in floral arrangements.  Each year there are new plant materials and techniques.  My daughter and I rate the arrangements.  It's fun to see her perspective.

Art in Bloom is also a great place for me to be able to photograph flowers up close in lovely and unique combinations.  The colors of flowers can be so incredibly vibrant, it takes my breath away.

The flower arrangements also help you to study and notice more about the artwork that inspired the arrangement. It really makes it an enjoyable event.

Don't the pink roses and matching pink tulips work well together in the photo below?  And I am going to try to mix in Queen Annes Lace into some flower arrangements this summer.

I'm sharing this on my blog because flowers and flower arrangements are inspirational to me, and I know many bloggers decorate with flowers sometimes.  Funny, rarely do my arrangements at home look like these.

For the vintage parties I link to, the art is antique and vintage.  And so is flower arranging.

Art in Bloom Flowers 2011

Spring is here according to the calender.  Here in southern Wisconsin almost all snow melted in the last week, and today we had thunderstorms and lots of rain.  But probably the first large display of spring flowers I will get to see will be indoors, at the Milwaukee Art Museum's Art in Bloom Event, March 31 to April 3, 2011.

Flower Arrangement and inspiration, 2010

At the Art in Bloom event, sponsored by the Milwaukee Art Museum Garden Club, professional floral designers create a flower arrangement inspired by a work of art.  The arrangements are then displayed near the art work that inspired it.  In 2010, there were about artwork 40 'inspired' arrangements, an inspired vendor area, and arrangements from designers who gave lectures and demonstrations.  My photos in this post are from the 2010 event.

One thing I love about photography, (and the event), is that there are many different ways to view each arrangement, and the art that inspired it.  Up close, individual blooms have beautiful textures and colors.  Further away you see the arrangement and the shape.  Photographs of the backed off views of the arrangement paired with the art inspiration are perhaps the most challenging.

The mostly white floral arrangement shown in the two photos above could be smelled as you entered the room - fragrant lilies smelled great, the flowers glowed, and the all glass sculpture behind it glittered.  The flower arrangement was my viewers choice, for one of my favorite glass sculptures at the museum.

I love getting up close to exotic blooms for photography, trying to find the best angles and lighting given the location.  Every year I vow to get better.

This year will be the fourth year the museum is holding the event, and every year my daughter has seen it with me.  She checks off the map to make sure we don't miss a spot.

I will admit I try to pretty much photograph all of the arrangements. I think I photographed the arrangement below in more then seven different ways. (But NOT on the day that my daughter was with me ;)

April Project

Well, April is more then half gone, and spring flowers are beginning to bloom. Today the children were back in school after a long spring break.
-
I dug into a project that has been beckoning me for a while. Over one year ago (or at least in 2008) I purchased an hand bound antique "book" that seems to be compilation of a "The Cottage Hearth" subscription for the year 1882. I think Country Hearth was a monthly periodical, a magazine of sorts from over 130 years ago (?). The inch and a half thick volume is crumbling, and I probably paid to much for it, but the illustrations were beautiful to me - from the height of the Victorian era, in my opinion. The "April" banner above is an example of the illustrations in this delicate volume.
-
I am inspired by the illustrations and am going to try to recreate some of the bouquets, flower arrangements, and embellishments with actual flowers and photography, interpreted, of course. I hope to have an example of my interpretation in this blog before the month is out. (Uh oh, a goal)
-
I also decided to feature some of my favorite illustrations as cards in my etsy store, under vintage. It will be quite different then my photography, of course, but if I can't play with my shop, who can? My interests are varied and I guess my shop will reflect that sooner or later. (I play with mosaics, and my shop has had three mosaic products for months now. So the shop is kind of varied already.)
-
The dragonfly above is the first image I am considering using for a card.
-
Bye for now!

Anticipation - Milwaukee's Art in Bloom event

Milwaukee Art Museum Art in Bloom flower arrangements Jeanne Selep Imaging

Milwaukee Art Museum Art in Bloom flower arrangement Copyright 2008 Jeanne Selep of Selep ImagingThere is so much going on in April. But one event I am really looking forward to this week is the Art in Bloom event at the Milwaukee Art Museum, April 2-5, 2009.
-
Art in Bloom events are annual floral-art events held at multiple museums through out the US. (Boston's Museum of Fine Art, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Oregon and more) The Milwaukee Art Museum's Inaugural Art in Bloom event was first held last year in 2008.
-
Multiple florists create bouquets of flowers inspired by works of art from the Museum's collection. The bouquets are displayed close to the inspiring art works, scattered throughout the museum. You get to see unique beautiful and inspired bouquets as you wander the art museum in a meandering tour.
-

There are also lectures, demos, tours, a vendor area, and more beautiful flowers. For me, its a perfect combination of two of my loves - flowers and art.

The museum has events like flower ranging lectures and demos and landscaping lectures throughout the four days. The cost for the lectures isn't inexpensive, but the price means the museum can book top national designers and authors to fly in for the lectures. I attended a demo/lecture by Ron Morgan on flower arranging last year. Watching the top designer create 5 or more very different flower arrangements in an hour or so taught me more in 60 minutes then reading for 3 days would have. It was funny, entertaining and a great way to learn.

I had arranged to meet Kyle Zubatsky for breakfast at the museum and we got to walk through the museum together. She owns a gallery and exhibits art nationally and so walking the museum with her was a particular treat.

On Sunday I took my family to the see the Art in Bloom show.

I hope you enjoy some of the photos that I took from last year's show - I'll try to get some photos from this year's show posted after this year's event.
