Memorial Day Hutch

Hutch with vintage china porcelain plates
Image 1: Red, white, and blue vintage china arrangement

For Memorial Day I arranged red, white and blue porcelain and glassware in my china cabinet.  I will probably tweek this display until past the 4th of July.
(Even now I see a spot where I would add a small plate - the lower left corner - sigh...)

Currently, one of my favorite plate sets (that I actually use) is the Royal Cauldon plate (shown below).  I used this plate multiple times in this hutch arrangement.  I have eight dinner and eight bread plates.

What I love about this set is the curvey hand painted edging and the broad gilt edge.  The individual plate doesn't jump out at you in the hutch, but holding a plate in your hand and seeing the micro dots and wavy lines is something else.  And I marvel at the hand painting skill that the craftspeople had to have to paint each plate so consistently.

I got the Royal Cauldon plates at the end of a 3-4 day estate sale, during the bag sale portion.  A bag sale is when there is so much left over stuff that they let you fill a bag for $5.00.  My lucky day.

The Limoge France gold edged plate (below) has a beautiful gilt border with a relief design in the gilt.  This plate didn't photograph particularily well - it's more beautiful then it looks here.

Another plate that is hard to photograph but that I really like is the Sakura plate (Galaxy pattern) shown below.  This is a contemporary (Holiday?) plate set sold by Target in the last decade or so.  I got a set of them at a rummage sale and I love them.  But to get the gold stars to show as gold makes the navy blue plate want to photograph as black.  It is also looking like the lip is curved, when really it is just the way the window light is lighting it.  LOL.  Aren't these blog posts an exercise in patience or what?

And I decided to confess - I bought the red and white plates and mugs at a recent estate sale just for arranging on my hutch.  I could buy a bunch of flowers and enjoy them for a week, or enjoy these plates and mugs for years to come.  I figured they would add some wow to my arrangement.
[The 5 mugs with the stars on the bottom are Fitz and Floyd porcelain]

4th of July Hutch

Welsh Dresser China cabinet Hutch
4th of July China Display

I changed my hutch to a 4th of July display.  My Welsh Dresser is giving my lots of chances to finally figure out what sort of china I have stashed and hidden in the basement.

(If I tuck my rummage sale finds in the corner of the basement where my husband won't end up tripping over them, then I can accumulate finds guilt free and have). I have been buying treasure for nearly a decade now...  ;)

The stars and stripes set of china in this display I found at the end of the day at a church or school rummage sale.  The "end of the day" at a church/school rummage sale is when china sets marked $20+ that haven't sold can get knocked down to $5-$10 for the set.  (I vaguely recall paying $8.)

My family and I use this set around this time of year, so I kept 6 dinner plates out of the display for everyday use, and I was able to.   The pattern is 'Colonial' by Warren Kimble, Sakura from 1997.

The blue edged plates with gold stars pattern, (4 large plates in this display) is another rummage sale set I found.  The pattern, "Galaxy" is also by Sakura.  [I only realized that both sets are from Sakura just now as I am writing this blog post!]  This novelty set was sold by the Target store chain several years ago, and I now have seen the set in multiple rummage sales.  (I know Target sold the sets because I saw the ad for the sets in some old decorator magazines I have.)

The vintage stemware I bought for $1 a stem or less.  I purchased the clear stemware because of the gold rim - it really adds to the look, I think.

I am kind of loving mixing the new plates with the older antique plates, which are my real loves.  Writing out what each of the plates are would get boring, but I will mention one other plate - the crazy white one with red stripes cost me 49 cents at good will.

Have a blessed 4th of July and enjoy your family!
