Valentine Day Hutch

Happy Valentine's Day!  Today I am sharing this year's Valentine's Day Hutch arrangement, made up almost entirely of estate sale and thrifted china.

I have always loved Valentine's Day - the colors, the images, the hearts and symbols.  Valentine's Day combines many loves - flowers, ribbons, lace, hearts, treats and chocolates.  The colors - crisp whites (or ivory) and pinks and reds make my heart sing.

Image 2: White Mikasa "Love story" china in arrangement

I wanted to use my favorite Valentine themed china: "Love Story" by Mikasa, shown above.  The "Love Story" pattern has silver reflective ribbons forming hearts, and I only have 2 place settings.  As a main goal I wanted to use some 'new to me' rose edged floral plates I got in 2023, Royal Albert's "Serena" pattern, shown below.  Arranging started easily and then got complicated as I arranged and rearranged various dishes.

Some of the pieces of Mikasa's "Love Story" had gotten separated and misplaced.  As I found the pieces, I came across some vintage Venetian red glass that I felt I had to use, and I ended up rearranging parts of my basement!

I decided I would need to mix contemporary and classic china so that I could use the vintage "Serena" plates.

I like the juxtaposition of contemporary china with older vintage patterns, but I found it difficult to arrange.  As a quilter, I am comfortable having mismatched colors and patterns.  To me it adds an energy to an arrangement.  I added the Butterfly dessert plates shown above for spots of color.

I added fun accent pieces, like my Italian souvenir "Etruscan horse" that has it's own story and now lives in the hutch.  (She was not thrifted).

I used this milk glass dove candy dish I bought several years ago specifically for Valentine's displays, and it joined the various little porcelain birds I frequently use in my hutch.

It felt like a struggle, but eventually I came up with an arrangement I liked.  I hope you like it too.

It's been awhile since I shared a photography of the entire "Welsh Dresser" china hutch.  To get a full picture of the hutch I have to move the dinette table and chairs out of the way; and a light fixture is still in the way.  It doesn't result in the greatest photo, but I feel the Welsh dresser is a fantastic piece of furniture, with 10 usable drawers and lots of space to display china.

I hope everyone has a great Valentines Day!

St. Patrick's Day Hutch

St Patricks Day china cabinet hutch
St. Patrick's Day Hutch Arrangement

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  I don't remember ever arranging my Hutch for St. Patrick's Day, but this year I decided to try, and here is the result.  Apparently (but also not exactly surprisingly) I do have enough green dishes to make it work.

Boopie Burple Anchor Hocking Forest Green glassware
Anchor Hocking Burple Forest Green Glassware

I started with some forest green glassware that I consider ubiquitous.   Made by Anchor Hocking and called the unlikely name Burple, they seem to be in nearly every antique store, older estate sale, and are often in resale shops too.  I love the deep green glow this glassware has.

Patterned Majolica Plate and Egg and Bluebirds
Patterned Majolica Plate, Irish Dresden Egg, and Bluebirds

I have stories about many of the dishes I've found - stories I remember as I am assembling the hutch.  For example, five of the green Majolica plates were souvenirs from France -  found in a tiny resale shop stumbled upon while waiting for a train back to Paris somewhere in a small town somewhat near a French (palace) "Chateau".  The dishes bring a flood of memories.

The shell plates below remind me of the retiring antique dealer (over 80 years old) who gave me an incredible deal on some plates I had admired for years.

Limoge Handpainted Shell plates

Will he return to the antique show after this pandemic?  Perhaps I'll never see him again, but these dishes will remind me of him - and also his wife who was no longer able to attend the antique shows in the last couple of years.

Occasionally I have a "where in the heck did I get this" moment as I find something I forgot I owned.  ($5 bag sales are a fun end of an estate sale tool in Wisconsin - Other thrifters - do they have them in your part of the world?)

Antique green coinspot tumbler
Tumbler Love

I also included my green tumblers.  I don't know why I like tumblers so much, but I do!

hutch St Patricks Day china cabinet
Meissen plate from Germany

I found the Meissen plate above at an estate sale in 2020.  (I wore my mask.)  I didn't own any Meissen plates, so I bought it as a sort of retail therapy.  It gets the center position, even though I recognize it's kind of over the top.

I've been enjoying the St. Patrick's day decor I've noticed on many blogs.  I hope you enjoy my contribution.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Memorial Day Hutch

Hutch with vintage china porcelain plates
Image 1: Red, white, and blue vintage china arrangement

For Memorial Day I arranged red, white and blue porcelain and glassware in my china cabinet.  I will probably tweek this display until past the 4th of July.
(Even now I see a spot where I would add a small plate - the lower left corner - sigh...)

Spring vintage china porcelain plates
Image 2: Closeup of China

Currently, one of my favorite plate sets (that I actually use) is the Royal Cauldon plate (shown below).  I used this plate multiple times in this hutch arrangement.  I have eight dinner and eight bread plates.

Spring vintage china porcelain plates
Image 3: Royal Cauldon dinner plate - pattern 4587.  10.25 inches diameter.

What I love about this set is the curvey hand painted edging and the broad gilt edge.  The individual plate doesn't jump out at you in the hutch, but holding a plate in your hand and seeing the micro dots and wavy lines is something else.  And I marvel at the hand painting skill that the craftspeople had to have to paint each plate so consistently.

Welsh Dresser Hutch vintage china plate display
Image 4: Hand-painted edging detail of 3 Cauldon China plates

I got the Royal Cauldon plates at the end of a 3-4 day estate sale, during the bag sale portion.  A bag sale is when there is so much left over stuff that they let you fill a bag for $5.00.  My lucky day.

Spring vintage china porcelain plates
Image 5: Detail of China in hutch

The Limoge France gold edged plate (below) has a beautiful gilt border with a relief design in the gilt.  This plate didn't photograph particularily well - it's more beautiful then it looks here.

Limoge France dinner plate
Image 6: Limoge France dinner plate - 9.5 inches diameter

Another plate that is hard to photograph but that I really like is the Sakura plate (Galaxy pattern) shown below.  This is a contemporary (Holiday?) plate set sold by Target in the last decade or so.  I got a set of them at a rummage sale and I love them.  But to get the gold stars to show as gold makes the navy blue plate want to photograph as black.  It is also looking like the lip is curved, when really it is just the way the window light is lighting it.  LOL.  Aren't these blog posts an exercise in patience or what?

Sakura dinner plate Galaxy pattern
Image 7: Sakura dinner plate, Galaxy pattern - 9.5 inches diameter

And I decided to confess - I bought the red and white plates and mugs at a recent estate sale just for arranging on my hutch.  I could buy a bunch of flowers and enjoy them for a week, or enjoy these plates and mugs for years to come.  I figured they would add some wow to my arrangement.
[The 5 mugs with the stars on the bottom are Fitz and Floyd porcelain]

Remembering why we have Memorial Day - Click here for a post and WW2 photos from Okinawa with my favorite WW2 vet - my Dad.  We should all appreciate those who have defended our liberty.
