2022 - A good year!

The last day of 2022 - it's here so fast!  I am going to quickly send out this short post, which will increase my posts this year by 50%.  (From 2 to 3!)  I haven't given up on blogging, but 2022 was a year of returning to travel, and 2022 was probably my most creative year yet.

I went on 7 vacations (some small - weekend weddings, Trips to nearby Door County, WI), and one incredible trip to Italy - Milan, Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre and Lake Garda. I created more mosaics, worked on printmaking, improved my calligraphy (and attended IAMPETH's conference in Atlanta, Georgia), dabbled in ceramics (I wasn't planning on that, but...) and even learned how to use a forge. Quilting got a boost when I attended my first ever AQS Paducah Quilt show.

I hope to post more in 2023 - or travel more, create more, and hopefully I'll manage to do both!

Happy New Year

I'm sending wishes for a

Fantastic 2023!

Valentine's Day Cards

Valentines Day Cards Anna Griffin
Valentine's Day Cards

Happy Valentine's Day!  Valentine's Day is an easy holiday to love, even without vacation days and special meals.  (Do cookies and deserts  count?)  Valentine's Day is especially favored if the colors pink and red make your heart sing; and if flowers, hearts and lace appeals to your soul like it does to mine.

A friend held a small Valentine's Day card making party/workshop at her house, sharing some of her supplies.  Together three people made a stack of cards.  Today I am sharing the cards I made on that fun creative day.

Six Valentines Day Cards

It surprised me how long the first cards took to make - there were so many beautiful materials that choices overwhelmed the mind.  (and sometimes I was literally only combining 2 or 3 elements to make one card!)  I think finishing the first card took over 1 hour, but it was also a time spent enjoying the beautiful papers and embellishments.  As we got into the swing of things, the following cards became easier and faster.  Creative design takes time even with/especially with tons of materials at hand, and the results were worth it.

I wish you a Happy Valentine's Day!  It's a fun time to  enjoy Valentine's posts.  Consider this post my virtual Valentine to you, and you just got 10 Valentines, if anyone asks...

Note:  The cards are made with mostly Anna Griffin papers and embellishments and some vintage lace.  I photographed the cards on a vintage tablecloth.

Blue and White Mosaic Table

Mosaic Love blue and white checkers
I Love Mosaics!

Today I am sharing some "Mosaic Love" in blue and white - crisp colors for winter in Wisconsin.

I was working on a blue and white mosaic table post in February of 2020, before the pandemic "became a distraction".  Now, 2 years later, I am finally finishing the post.

Blue and White Mosaic Table
Blue and White Mosaic Table

I made the table above several years ago, using an resale find table that I painted white after creating the mosaic.  A friend had made a beautiful checkered mosaic on a different project, inspiring me to create my blue and white checkered table.  I used Blue Willow plates, damaged flow blue plates and more.

All of the white squares are commercially available 3/4 inch bathroom tiles.  [The 3/4 inch solid white tiles used to be common, but are now harder to find - 1 inch tiles seem to be the new standard.  Cutting a more or less flat 1 inch square from the edge of a plate is much harder than cutting a 3/4 of an inch square, so using 3/4 inch tiles is important part of this project.]

Initial cuts for making squares from a chipped plate

I cut porcelain plates with a wet tile saw to make the squares that have blue.  The photo above shows initial cuts on a chipped plate I reused.  Before this project I only used the tile saw significantly on one other project.  On this project I didn't use the saw on every edge, and if I do another checkered pattern in the future, I'll cut every tile with the saw.

Above is another in process photo.

The flow blue plate above was badly stained, scratched and crazed.  I love flow blue china and collect these dishes, so I only used very damaged, chipped or stained plates for mosaics.  I feel glad I was able to use this plate in this project.

The table's dimensions are 14.5 inches x 22.5 inches x 20 inches high.  The individual squares are 3/4 of an inch.  The photo below can be saved as a free desktop image.

Another project with similar colors created maybe 4-5 years ago was the bocce ball below that I covered with mosaic pieces from blue willow china.

I mentioned in this note here that I like to learn from my projects.

Some notes:

Next time I do a checkered mosaic, I will draw lines on the table underneath the grid for better alignment, and I will try to use the wet saw for every piece.  And I'll grout better - I use this table almost everyday and the grout is a bit sketchy!  Maybe someday I will re-grout it.
