Glass Garden Flowers

Waiting for spring to arrive in Wisconsin is no longer flower free.  A while back, I decided to enjoy some glass flower blooms while my tulips and irises were thinking about growing.  I created glass flowers that bloom all winter long.

Creating glass flowers from vintage glass platters, bowls and dishes salvaged or reused, "upcycled" into blossoms of glass adds a real glow to my winter garden.

The flower are cheery on overcast days, but when the sun comes out the flowers can explode into a shower of sparkling glittering points of light.  (The photos don't do the flowers justice.)

Most of the glass was found at rummage sales, goodwill, and estate sales.  Many of the larger pieces have significant scratches, some of the platters are even chipped, but the flaws disappear at a distance.

Selecting the combinations of glass to use adds a lot of fun to the creative process, and I find myself saving special centers for just the right platter combination.

The way the pressed glass sparkles in the sun and the reflections and shadows produced makes me smile.

This summer I might mass the flowers in the backyard, in and surrounded by more greenery, but for now they brighten up my front yard.  It's just as well I live near the end of a quiet cul de sac, I'm not sure the whimsy would be appreciated in some suburban homeowners associations.

Improving your British accent

Here is a different type of post for me, one I won't link to parties. But I decide I should record this here.

I have teenagers interested in drama, and Shakespeare, and so conversations with attempted British accents and language occasionally fill the air.

The phrases that I have collected below can improve your "Britishness" when used in your conversation.  Of course you need the British sound, which I can't describe, but there are You Tube videos that can assist you with that.

Try these phrases.  Sprinkle a few of these in as you talk, and you will likely sound more British.  Although presented and occasionally used as a sentence, these phrases are often part of longer sentences. So, in no particular order....

Right, well.
Get on with it then.

How are you getting on?

She was a little off.
He was a little off too.

Bloody right.

Go on.
Go on then.
Off you go.

Splendid.

Pathetic.

Come on then.

A word...

Top notch.

I read that bit.

Right of course.
Carry on then.

Now a bit about pronunciation.

American "paid" is said   pay-ed
American "enough" is said   a-nuf  (long a)
American "don't know" can be said   Do no,  (2 long o's) (lower class talking)

Confident - cone (like the word) not con

American "Renaissance" is said so amazingly lovely by the Brits, you really need to hear it. And isn't it great that the Brits use terms like lovely, just as a stand-alone phrase?

Poinsettias

The poinsettia plant strikes me as a mid-century icon of Christmas - I see lots of vintage table clothes and paper goods (and aprons!) from 1950's and even earlier. So it's fun to see how plant breeders are recreating this iconic Christmas plant.

This year, the Milwaukee Domes featured new twists on the classic poinsettia in it's latest Christmas show.
(The Domes, also known as the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory is Milwaukee's unique version of a glass conservatory.  This description doesn't do it justice, but my post is on poinsettias, not the Domes.)

I was told that what we consider petals are actually just colored leaf foliage, the true "flower" of a poinsettia is in the center.

I'll show you one image from the Domes 2015 Christmas show dome, where all the poinsettias are.  It's just a fraction of the many views I could show you, but I want to publish this post.
