| Image 1: Mount Rainier from the Air |
Returning from a trip to Seattle, Washington State, (USA), I took an eastbound flight near sunset. The timing ended up being perfect for catching these sunset images of Mount Rainier from the airplane.
|
| Image 2: Mount Rainier. |
The clouds were lower than Mount Rainier's peak, and made the view seem like a fantasy landscape. There is another mountain peak on the right in the photo, barely visible, that I only noticed when reviewing my photos. Maybe Mount Saint Helen?
|
| Image 3: Mount Rainier at Sunset |
The changing sunset as the plane raced forward allowed me the telephoto view, above, of Mount Rainier at sunset.
|
| Image 4: Smoke from airplane |
The same sunset lit up these different "clouds". Smoke?
|
| Image 5: Forest fire from airplane |
Unfortunately
I confirmed it was smoke when I saw a forest fire from the air, a new first for me. Sadness followed a wonderful view.
|
| Image 6: Mount Rainier at Sunset |
Image 6 is about 3 minutes after Image 1, showing the colors had really changed. Also, now another peak is visible on the left. Perhaps Mount Adams?
I had pointed out Mount Rainer to two 20-30 somethings sitting next to me, and also the forest fire. What resulted was a fantastic four hour conversation that ranged on topics far and wide. It was one of the best flight experiences - despite the forest fire.
The two left me with this quote which I wrote down -
"Sharing tea with a stranger
is one of life's true delights"
- from The Last Airbender.
Notes: I tried to keep the colors true to the photos taken as I remember them and as the camera recorded them on September 25, 2025. The coloration in Image 4 and 5 are due to the sunset coloring the clouds. Mount Rainier is 14,411 feet high; Mount Saint Helen is now 8634 feet; Mount Adams is 12276 feet high. I'm not at all positive that the other mountains are correctly identified, let me know if you can identify them.

These are absolutely amazing captures!
I've never seen such wonderful colors from an airplance!
Absolute stunners!
These are some of the best sunset photos I have ever viewed. Your artistic eye is evident in each one. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

Wow... fantastisc scenes indeed.
J’adore ces photos. Bravo. Et les commentaires et explications sont bien agréables à lire. (Kwarkito)
Amazing shot.
...Jeanne, clouds look wonderful up above. Thanks for sharing these lovely images.
What wonderful shots of Mount Rainier. They do look like a fantasy landscape.
Oh wow! What amazing photos, your view was amazing! So sad to see the forest fire though.
Such beautiful images of Mount Rainier! When I was growing up we lived in Seattle for four years and we had a view of Mount Rainier from our living room window. It was stunning and my mom's favorite thing about the house! Now there are other homes nearby that obscure the view but we'll always have that memory! Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos. Visiting via #MMBC
A frequently enjoyed sight, during my years as a Vancouver WA resident. Of course not from that altitude...
This was the only view of Mr. Rainier we saw leaving Seattle after a 6 day stay. Clouds were constantly over that way, despite some really nice sunshiney days. I remember it was July 4 and we saw fireworks when flying across the country.
Thanks for the lovely reminder of that stunning view!!! Sandi
What fantastic shots! YOu really were treated to views up there. Glorious colours too! #MySundaySnapshot
Wow those clouds around Mr. Rainier are incredible! That is much too bad about the forest fire though.
wow - those images are glorious. Stunning in fact. Lucky you to have a window seat! Enjoy your week. I am joining you at Through my Lens linkup.
Surreal color and light. Happy Thanksgiving and blessings to you!
When I was growing up in Tacoma, I could see the mountain from my bedroom window on a (rare) clear day.
This is just gorgeous! It's sad about the fire, but wow did it make for beautiful colors. Flying in and out of Seattle is one of my favorite views! Visiting from the Wednesdays in the Studio linkup.
Those are beautiful.....the colors and the clouds...Michelle
Love the stunning views.
The colours and clouds look magical.
Sad to see the forest fire though.
Spectacular photos from a passenger plane. I have never seen anything like these. Well done.
Oh wow!! These photos are just so amazing. Beautiful sight #MMBC
And thanks for also sharing with #Allseasons
Wow! Excellent captures! Thank you for linking up.
Lovely photos of a magnificent mountain and cloudscape. Forest fires are always sad to see and they are all too frequent for us here in Australia too, so I understand how you felt. Nevertheless, the ensuing conversation gladdened you and it is such chance encounters that sometimes make good new friends for us. Thanks for taking part in the "My Sunday Best" meme.
Beautiful photos! And I'm so glad you had a good conversation with your fellow flyers. Getting a bad seatmate would be horrible. My kids watch the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Wow! What perfect timing! These pictures are amazing!
Thank you so much for including Garden affair in the list of parties u link up with your posts.
I just love your snaps of Mount Rainier which are looking gorgeous from flight. Thanks for sharing with Garden Affair.
