Country Roads in Autumn

Autumn Fall Road Door County by Jeanne Selep
Image 1: Road in a Door County park in Autumn

Autumn in Door County, Wisconsin (USA) shimmers with color.  Indeed, much of Wisconsin lights up with fall colors, but these images were taken during a magical weekend in Door County.

The weather cooperated beautifully - sunny and no rain!  I traveled back roads and county parks, searching for stunning foliage and trees, and tunnel views formed by trees branching over the road.

Around here people try to predict "peak color" for fall foliage, and on this weekend I felt peak color was imminent.  There were still areas of green, and not a lot of reds.  On the plus side, most of the leaves were still on the trees.

I find myself wondering if the trees turned orange and red in the days after I left.  I also want to know how thickly the leaves pile up on the roads when the trees drop them.

Red Autumn Oak leaves by Jeanne Selep

A small cluster of red caught my eye.  Colorful oak leaves! As a tree enthusiast, I have felt that oak leaves don't usually turn fantastic colors.  (In my experience oak leaves turn yellow or brown.)  But this small cluster of oak leaves proved that on rare occasions oak leaves can turn fantastic colors.
[ Here are links to two artworks I made with oak leaves: Autumn Wreath and Oak Leaves Explored ]

Barn and vineyard in Door County

Door County has many picturesque places - small towns, lighthouses, harbors, buildings, restaurants, shops and more, like this barn and vineyard.  Yet that weekend will stand out in my memory for the wedding I attended and the fall foliage.

Door county is a vacation area enjoyed by many, and fall is one of the busiest times.  Views of another sort can be seen on crowded weekend days....

Small Town vacation Traffic

(On weekends, cars trying to park in town can cause long lines of cars backed up on the roads (sometimes half an hour) when entering small towns.  Sister Bay, shown above, has a population of about 1,170 people year round.  Notice the fall colors beyond the town.  I felt I had to disclose a more typical view of Door County as well.)

Enjoy your fall and my fall photos.  I'm looking forward to the Holiday season.

I hope you enjoy the rest of 2025
and the Holiday Season!

Your photos are so gorgeous! We tend to have more orange and yellow than red too.

I only live a few hours from Door County and the traffic has kept me from going. But seems so beautiful. May have to buckle up and take the trip because it looks beautiful.

We went to Door County for our anniversary this year. We spent the first day in Sheboygan and actually enjoyed that more than Door County. But we also loved Cave Point Park and Cana Island in Door County. Visiting from Sweet Tea and Friends

Gorgeous colors and beautiful photos. Unless I go upstate or to Mt. Lemmon I see very like fall foliage in Tucson, AZ. Thanks for sharing.

I love Door County, and spent many pleasant days there with my wife whose home town was Manitowoc, not that far away. Beautiful fall colors in your photos. Thanks for the great post.

What beautiful images you have captured! I feel like the peak of autumn color only lasted a week here in Rhode Island, and I wish I had taken more photos myself.

There's nothing like a tunnel of trees in Autumn! Delightful pictures.

Beautiful fall colors! The last photo made me smile, as one of the small mountain towns where I live had to actually close their exit to traffic as too many leaf peepers swarmed their town and they were worried about not having road access if there was an emergency.

Wow that is a busy road. It certainly is pretty where you are. I wish I could take photos while I am driving, when I'm a passenger I tend to read and forget to look at the scenery. Thank you for joining in with #pocolo

How lovely! I always enjoy Autumn, especially if there are lots of deciduous trees in their season's finery. Thank you for taking part in the "My Sunday Best" meme!
