Journaling 2025 and 2026

It's January, the start of a new year.  January gives me a perfect time to relax, regroup, and reflect on the previous year.  Reviewing my journals can assist me.

Journals
Image 1: Years of memories in Journals!

I have recorded in journals for decades. In 2007, after years of trying to organize my life via other means, (business day planners, electronic spreadsheets, and more), I settled on using the smallish journals shown.

Journaling helps me keep track of my life. There are times I have been super busy, and yet I could barely remember the events of the previous week/month/year. Sometimes I can't remember what I did (or even ate) a day or two ago, and yet I know I had little free time.  What did I do the last two summers?  I can barely recall.

Can anyone relate?

So I use journals as an aid.  I can read one of my journals, and details flood back to me, reminding me of a (busy? hectic? sometimes crazy(?)) life.

I need to write in a journal to use this aid.  I write a page or two a day, mostly jotted-down notes of events, things I did, read, watched, ate; to-do lists, and more.

Often a day in the journal consists of more phrases than full sentences. (Is that bullet journaling?)  Occasionally an entire sentence or paragraph will be written.  And there are checklists, many of them with check marks made (and dated) months later.

Journals 2007 to 2025

In recent years, (on some days), I try to remember to write three things (or more) I am grateful for.  (Is this "gratitude journaling"?)

[They say gratitude journaling is supposed to be good for you. - Who are the "they"?]

Sometimes my grateful items are "adulted - called the plumber"; "paid the Property tax bill".  On better days, my grateful items include fun events like "Garden Tour", "Mosaic class", "Dinner with Friends", club meeting, Blog post out, finished project xxx, etc.

I love having these journals to reference, sometimes years later.  Where did we spend Thanksgiving, or the 4th of July in 2014-2024...  What was the annual Christmas party theme?  Who attended?  It's in my journals!  (Also, maybe in photos.)

For example, in 2025: Christmas Party theme Harry Potter...  28 people at my brother's house.  I brought xxx food items...

(We do a themed Christmas, doesn't everyone?)

I kept a journal on vacation trips long before I attempted to record my daily life. My first journal of this sort was a trip to Spain when I was in High School.  Reviewing and remembering details from trips makes me content (I get to realize I have come so far!!!).  In more recent journals I record the names of hotels, museums, restaurants, financial details, and notable memories.

For example, in 2025 I traveled (overnight, out of my house):

Japan in April 2025
Boston in April 2025
Camping Canoe trip in Wisconsin August 2025
Seattle in September 2025
New York in December 2025.

(Try keeping those details straight 5 years later...)

Journaling gives me a satisfaction and improves my memory, and assists me in various goals.  (all those lists!)

I recommend journaling, although perhaps not as obsessively.

"The unexamined life is not worth living"

- Socrates

"The unexamined life may not be worth living, but the life too closely examined may not be lived at all."

- Mark Twain

The first quote above may seem harsh, but I do see the benefits journaling and reviewing makes in my life...

For the other part of this post, reviewing 2025, things went well, all things considered.  I posted once a month (an on-going goal).  I traveled to places near and far.  I created projects and read books.

A wet basement in August exhausted me and threw me for a loop.  (Rare flooding in Wisconsin due to extreme rainfall.)  Perhaps someday I will write a post on it.  (Only 1-2 feet of water, many things were spared.)  My insurance paid for the new water heater, the new furnace, the new washing machine, etc.  I had replaced my furnace in 2024 with a new one, and now I have a new furnace in 2025.  I don't know what to think about that, so I try not to, and I channel gratitude.

My main goals in 2026 include blogging once a month, creating more, traveling some (including at least one National Park), and completing a reorganization of the basement.  My stretch goal includes exhibiting at least one artwork somewhere.

  2. This is very inspiring! I journal daily about my Bible reading, but I think now I want to start journaling daily events. Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. Even seeing those journal covers is inspiring. I love keeping a journal, and I have lots of them too. You had some great travel in 2025 too. My year was not a big travel one. And I love Harry Potter, so big smiles on your Christmas photo.

    1. It's great knowing that others keep "lots" of journals. I don't think many of my day-to-day aquaintances journal. (If they do, I don't know it)

  4. Hello! I am popped over for the first time from Sweet Tea & Friends. I am so inspired!!! Look at all those journals, memories, moments....I love this. Last year was the first time I was consistent with journaling my prayers. This year, I want to journal my travels better (I do try) and I want to journal my moods and emotions. Thank you for the inspiration.

    1. Thank you for saying I inspired your. Good luck, and I encourage you! I don't tackle mood and emotions much, yet, but journaling evolves over the years.

  5. I have never journaled. I think the closest I have come, and it wasn't even intentional, was participating in a 15th of the month flower gardening meme. I've participated every 15th of the month since around May of 2011. True, it only tells me what was blooming, but in its way, it brings back other memories. I salute you for the daily writing habit.

    1. Your gardening meme sounds wonderful. I want to go back through photos and figure out what bloomed when in various years, because I know I have the photos. I sounds like you already have that. :)

  6. I look at my blog as my journal. I think I have a fairly goo memory about past events as so many people I know tell me that they don't remember much about their childhood while I remember so much! I do keep a "books I've read journal" and I an writing the story of my life to give to my children one day, so hopefully that will keep stirring up many memories ;)

    1. I love Goodreads for recording my books, because I read a lot and it helps me remember what I've read. I have a fairly good memory since I journal, and photograph a lot. I'm amazed at what I forget sometimes, though

  7. My friend brought me a journal in 1988 for Christmas and I've kept one ever since. (I also had childhood ones but they didn't survive a fire) I love looking back on things that have happened. Although some years have been better than others. There are a selection that I keep in a special drawer so I don't read them unless I need too. I do travel journals too. It's nice to meet someone who likes to keep it all written down too.

    1. Hello Anne, I've been to your blog often. You have been journaling for a lot longer than me. Keep it up! Journals are for bad times as well as the upbeat moments, and bad times can be tough to review. At least you know how things turned out when you re-read them.

  8. That is so cool that you have journals going back to 2007! It is a fantastic way to keep track of what you have been up to. I think that's why I like to blog, to keep a record on what has been going on in our lives.

    1. I've been on your blog often! I admire those bloggers who post more regularily. I can't keep up with blogging, but I can usually manage some quick journal notes, even though I sometimes have to go back several days to re-catch up.

  9. Journaling is something I am considering for 2026. I did not have a diary as a girl, but as an adult I have found writing things down, takes them away from worry. Visiting from #MMBC

  10. Hi Jeanne! Thanks for commenting on my blog. I enjoyed reading your blog. Your journals are so colorful! I can totally relate to not remembering what happened on such-and-such-a-day last year or the year before. I keep a 10-year journal--it only has 4 lines per day so I keep it very simple. But that works for me. I also found your Japan blog posts interesting--your trip and the earlier quilt show featuring Japanese quilts, as I lived in Japan for a while.

    1. Your journal sounds fantastic! Just the highlights! I think that would be a great side journal for me. (for the grateful part of each day.) Also, a good encouraging "tool" for my adult children.

    1. LOL, I am so not organized! Early on my journaling was a way to not lose to-do lists. But I do keep the filled up journals in a consistent location. :)

  12. I love seeing all your journals lined up together! I used to be much better about journaling but now tend to treat my blog as my online journal. I do still have a journal from a trip to France I took in high school though and I love looking back on it.

  14. This makes my heart so happy. Last year I decided to go back through all my journals and reread them, especially through the lens of my adult kids one day reading them! ha. (I threw away a few pages that were just too private and weren't really "me" anyway.) But the goal was too big. I didn't even come close to finishing. Nonetheless, it was a great experience and I'll continue reading through them. I love the Mark Twain quote so much. Copying it for myself. Thanks for sharing this.

  15. I admire your dedication to journaling! I keep a planner/journal that I keep notes, thoughts, appointments, etc..., in and I cannot do without it! Thank you for linking up.

  16. That Mark Twain quote applies to Insta and TikTok - when in the Paris Opera, women in long dresses were posing for photos - but they weren't going to the Opera (or even listening to the tour guide), they were just taking photos as if they were at the Opera (or at least with a gorgeous background). So less an examined life and more a 'documented' life...I guess. #TrafficJamReboot...

  17. Wow your autumn hutch is beautiful - my favorite, I have been journaling in a small notebook for a couple of years now, mostly as a way to gather my thoughts in widowhood. I use a couple of blogs to journal life - where we went, what we ate, when we celebrated. I think its very cool to look back and remember the way life was. Gives much perspective!
