2023 Year Wind-up

It's the last day of 2023...  Hello 2024!

Upcycled Ornament Wreath by Jeanne Selep
I made this Up-cycled Ornament Wreath!

I had goals for 2023.  In the beginning of 2023 I made the goal of posting a blog post at least once a month. Truly a modest goal, but something I hadn't done since 2009. I made this goal! As an additional "stretch" goal, I thought I should try to meet or exceed 15 posts. This will be my 16th post in 2023, which means I made more posts in 2023 than I have since 2011.

[Notes:  1.  I love the blog archive gadget on computer viewed blogs (you don't see the gadget with cell phone viewing.)  2. There were multiple months where I needed to "post soon, just to get the post in before the end of the month."  I only posted because of my goal.]

Conclusion: My stated, intentional goals worked!  And these goals kept me more in touch with the blogging world, and my nascent writing skills.

Last year, I said 2022 was probably my most creative year to date, and yet in 2023 I feel I explored, expanded and created more than in 2022, especially when including writing as a creative skill. (Which it is...)

In 2023 I traveled a lot, and still did a fair amount of creative projects.  For me 2023 was a good year, even though I recognize that it wasn't a good year for many people, and I reflect on this a lot.

I went on multiple vacations this year: Arizona in February; California in March-April; Paducah's quilt show in April; a Down South road trip in July to Charleston, Savannah and more; two camping trips, one a Canoeing Overnight on the Wisconsin River, and the other to a dark sky sight to see the Perseid Meteor shower, (which was just awesome); a trip to Canada and a wedding in Minnesota.

Now I am setting goals for 2024:

  • My daughter decided to set the goal of seeing all the National Parks, so I copied her and added that goal to my long-term goals.  (I saw 7 US National Parks in 2023*).
  • I am again planning on a blog post a month.
  • A new "stretch" goal is now more than 16 posts in 2024.
  • I want to post more (short) travel photography posts, reviewing and using the incredible library of photography I have amassed.  (Photography is definitely a creative effort, as is writing.)
  • I want to enter and exhibit at least one of my artwork's in an art show (and I have two framed pieces ready to go!)
  • Creating more in 2024:  Mosaics, needlework, printmaking, calligraphy, iron-work, writing and more.
  • More travel!
I hope that 2024 be a blessed year for you, and the world if possible.

Happy New Year!

May 2024 be a blessed year

for you and the world.

Sending wishes for a

Great 2024!

* National Parks seen in 2023: Saguaro National Park, Grand Canyon NP; Yosemite and Pinnacles NP; Mammoth Cave NP, Smoky Mountain NP, and Congaree NP, and Canadian National Parks Banff, Jasper and Kootenay NP.

Vintage Christmas Needlework

Vintage Christmas Reindeer Crosstitch Table RUnner
Image 1: Vintage Christmas Reindeer Cross Stitch

It's the time of the year when Christmas needlework, linens, and textiles add a personal touch to the festive decorations in many homes and Christmas trees.  Today I am sharing three vintage Christmas linens from my collection.

Vintage Christmas Reindeer Crosstitch Linen

These creations are handmade peeks into a recent past that is very different from today.   I cherish these linens made with creativity and dedication in a women's free time, and I feel a connection to the women who poured love into these many stitches.

Image 3: Vintage Christmas Reindeer Table Runner

My love of this red reindeer table runner has grown over time.  I've kept it safe and cared for over the years, though I haven't used it.  I've grown to love it like my own grandmother made it.  (She didn't.)

I never knew either of my grandmothers, and I don't have anything made by them.  Maybe they didn't have the time or interest in creating decorative items; or perhaps the items they created didn't last to be handed down; or perhaps items created were given to others.  So I've adopted needlework I've found at estate sales, and I mentally stitch connections to centuries of women relatives I've never met who must have created...

I can easily imagine the red reindeer runner being a favorite of some child in the household, who look forward to seeing the red reindeer reappear each Christmas.

Older children and adults may have favored the two train tea towels below.  They are a set but are not mirrored patterns.  I think they were displayed but never used when I bought them.  The workmanship makes me smile - each stitch carefully crafted, and the creases firmly pressed in.

These linens can send messages across time - carrying goodwill and the spirit of Christmas past into the present.  The styles of previous decades hint at the maker's interests (and available patterns), and could possibly be used to roughly date them, but instead I am happy to enjoy them and reflect on how those earlier holidays may have differed from mine today.

At your Christmas gatherings this year and the future, take some time to notice any needlework if you are lucky enough to come across any.  Even if (and especially if) some of the needlework seems "dated", ponder the thought of the maker's love and effort carrying the spirit of the holidays across time to the current day, and appreciate the works for all they represent.

May you share have a blessed Christmas,

stitched together with beautiful memories

from the past,

and creating memories for the future.

Christmas Hutch

I've decorated the China Hutch with Christmas china!

The Christmas holiday season always seems to fly by fast, making a quick seasonal change in my hutch a blessing.

Arranging my "new-to-me" Christmas Portmeirion china in the hutch made the switch from fall to Christmas go quickly.

The china pattern is Portmeirion's "The Holly and the Ivy" pattern, made in Britain.  (That's different than just England, right? I'm guessing that maybe it's manufactured in Ireland or Scotland)

Image 4: Christmas China Hutch Detail with Birds

I added vintage red glasses and accessories, some vintage stemware with gold trim, and my two favorite little birds, and the hutch arrangement was done!  (I have since found out that the vintage ruby red water goblets and the red footed "boat" bowl are the Moon and Stars pattern from L.E. Smith Glass.)

I purchased the china set at an estate sale.  A post Christmas sale in snowy weather yielded the china with tons of accessories priced to sell.  On the last day the markdown price was great, and I bought the entire set for around $100.

Sometimes I think about the previous owner lovingly collecting this Portmeirion set piece by piece.  She may have been a fantastic hostess.  I aspire to become a better at entertaining, and maybe this set will help.  In an unusual twist, I actually use this china for dining.  (Many dishes I own are for display only.)

I can only hope that setting up and decorating the Christmas tree will go as fast.  Enjoy the oncoming Christmas season!

Oh, it's fun to share posts with viewers on-line!  The work of collecting and displaying a collection is shared with dozens, hopefully some of which enjoy the post, whereas family members barely notice or register that a change has been made to their surroundings.  Really, 2-3 comments on-line can surpass all the accolades from the family - So leave a comment if you have time, but either way, thank you for visiting and ...

Enjoy the Christmas Holiday Season!
