Summer Vacations

Cinque Terre Italy by Jeanne Selep

This post features photos from past summer vacations while answering ten questions about summer vacations.  Compare answers with me!  (Question list below)

1.  Share your summer trips for 2025!

(2024 trips would be easier!)  Summer trips in 2025 should consist of (2) weekend in-state camping trips, (weather permitting).  One is a canoeing trip where you camp on a sandbar in a large river, water levels permitting.

I hope to add in a visit to Door County, and possibly (a day trip? or two??) to Chicago.  This summer is a good time to stay home and enjoy Wisconsin in it's best season, especially when money and vacation days were used for the spring trip to Japan.  Someone has work on the 4th of July this year, so no July 4th mini-vacation to Door County or Michigan, both destinations I've enjoyed in the past.

2.  How do you manage the post vacation laundry?

I try to wash vacation laundry almost right away once home - within a day or two.  It might have sand or bugs or whatever from afar.

3.  What are your most memorable summer vacations.

My most memorable summer vacation (post pandemic) was a trip to Italy including Venice and Cinque Terre.  Hot but wonderful!

Another special summer vacation was a road trip from Wisconsin to Charleston South Carolina which included three National Parks (Smoky Mountains!)  I discovered driving trips could be fun, and I set a goal of visiting all of/(most of) the National Parks !

4.  Do you cook or eat out on vacation?

We eat out on vacation because of places we stay (mostly hotels).  We have camped out and cooked, but I am not great at it.

5.  Do you over pack, under pack, or are you just right?

If I'm driving, I way over pack and that car is filled!  Even flying - It's so hard to not over pack.  Especially if there will be cold weather (gloves and heavy coats needed.)  Doing laundry on vacation isn't fun, and extra shoes are a must. (If it rains, I am not wearing wet shoes.  In Japan we had to buy my daughter new shoes because hers got soaked...)

Spring in Japan in Rain
Image 9: Spring in Tokyo, Japan - with wet shoes in the rain

6.  Beach, Lake or Mountains?

Where do I want to go? or what's close? (particularly for summer).  For me it is sights.  I'd prefer mountains and beaches, but this summer, near Wisconsin, no Mountains, so Lake.  Beaches can be rocky around here, like in Door County.

Notice that the rock Cairns can be taller than the kids*

7.  Road trip or Fly?

Road trips for small things (Weddings, camping), flying for "real" trips, and then rent a car once there if needed.  If you only get X days of vacation, I want to get to a spot fast and enjoy the location.  Except for that road trip to Charleston...

8.  My favorite vacation activities are... many things!  Seeing sights and museums, dining at great restaurants, exploring new places and cultures, hiking in beautiful locations, and shopping!

9.  Best packing tips?

Packing cubes, but not black ones.  (which is what I have)  Looking for adapters and power cords in black packing cubes tucked in with black clothes is a pain.  Having all socks and undies and technology extras in neat flexible packages, magic!

Kids watching sunset Door County

10.  Favorite road trip songs?

With multiple people we take turns selecting songs.  My daughter has incredible musical tastes, and I like hearing new tunes, .  When I pick a song it could be Billy Joel, Greatest Showman tunes, and Josh Groban's Oceano, and Canto Alle Vita.  I like peppy, upbeat and beautiful music.

Summer vacation Questions

This is a new kind of post for me.  I am participating in a link party where the questions above were posted (by Holly and Patty) with a link party where people answer these questions.  I hope you enjoyed my answers.  Thinking about the responses and writing this post took such a long time, but allowed me to organize vacation photos to find photos to share.  Feel free to post your answers or ideas on some or all of the questions below!

I hope your summer includes fun vacations
with friends and family!
...and a lot of beautiful sunsets!

We just got back from our favorite New Jersey shore beach vacation, and are headed to the Bahamas in 2 weeks for another beach vacation, and then 3 weeks later heading to St. Vincent's. So much traveling this year and I am loving it. Have a great week!

Great vacation post! We went on a cruise a few months ago to celebrate our anniversary. It was fun and relaxing, but I’m ready for a beach vacation!

I have that same goal to see most/all of the Nations Parks. I haven't visited one yet that I didn't like. Your photos are lovely! I particularly enjoy the ones from Italy as I've always wanted to go there.

Delightful photography! Any vacation that takes one away from the routine is great!

Such a fun read!
Your photos totally transported me—especially Cinque Terre.
Now I just need a suitcase and a ticket!

Awesome reading this post. I like driving trips as it gives me space to take lots and bring back too!

You have been to some beautiful locations all of over the world! Loved seeing your pics :)

We enjoy traveling! I sometimes over pack but do the best when we travel abroad. We typically stay where we can do laundry but if we don't I try to take care of that as soon as we get home.

What a fun posts with such lovely photos and commentary. Our city Tucson AZ is surrounded by beautiful mountains, but it's not that good a place to visit in summer (very hot, dry, or monsoon weather). It's wonderful in winter when other parts of the country are frigid. Warm regards (will be 102 here today), Nancy Andres @ Colors 4 Health

Great photos, all, but I must admit that the one of the S.C. bridge was my favorite. Perfectly framed at the perfect moment!

Wonderful vacation photos. Seems that you travel a lot. In September we fly to Mauritius ...we were there 10 years ago . I hope it will be as it was.
Have a good time and thanks for visiting my blog.

My best/most favorite trip was to Ireland a few years ago. We rented a car and ate in small pubs....maybe got lost a time or two. It was the best. I have learned how to pack a carry-on and a backpack for a weeks worth of adventures. Thank you for linking up.

What a great post, it's lovely when you can answer questions and I love your answers. I am so jealous of your trip to Japan (even if it was raining.) I'll never be able to go but I've been on Virtual reality, my favourite place is Kyoto with all the temples. I'm so glad you mentioned packing cubes, I knew there was something I was missing off my holiday list. :)

Your photos are magical. I love the beautiful stories you shared, too.

A couple of thoughts came to mind. First, I prefer to drive, because I like to travel in the states. I am NOT into hiking or camping, but I'm not opposed to sleeping in my car at rest areas. I can also clean up in the rest area, too. I try to not over pack. I pack items that go together. A change of blouse that goes with two different shorts. The only things I over pack are indies and socks. You never know when an accident could occur.

I LOVE the high tea in Japan. What a feast. Thank you for sharing it with us for T this Tuesday, Jeanne.

Wow, thanks for sharing your travels, you've visited some amazing places 😊. Wishing you a very Happy T Day! Hugs. Jo x

Love the photos and the tips. The best thing I did for myself was to purchase a Solgaard Carry-On Closet. I don't need the packing cubes as the closet has compartments so I pack outfits each day. I try to be minimalist and pack only what I need. I wear pants/shorts a couple of days in a row. With the closet, I don't need to unpack the suitcase as the closet attaches to the handle making packing up to go home a breeze. Happy T Day

chickenruby said...

Interesting read, thanks for sharing with #pocolo. I unpack and wash and put away the day I get home. I'm an over packer but as we live in the UK we're used to packing for 4 seasons in one day and I feel the cold.

So many wonderful vacations you have experienced. I'd love to visit Door County someday. For me, the best vacation is camping in the mountains near a lake :) Many blessings to you!

Jennifer Wise said...

I love your beautiful photos! Wow. So many of my responses to your questions vary, depending on what we're doing and who is going. If I'm doing a stay-in-one-location trip, I cook, but if it's a see-four-cities-in-a-week thing, I definitely eat out. It also depends on if it's a family trip or just me and my husband. I will say that for question #2, my best advice is to add a day on your calendar and treat it like a vacation. If you get home on the 15th, block out the 16th, too, as if you're still on vacation. :) I do this so I can have a recovery day to sort through photos and get them organized and ready to scrapbook, but I also do laundry that day, too. :)

Thanks for sharing this post at our month-long Will Blog for Comments #65 linkup. We'll be back to our regular schedule now, so #66 opens Monday morning. Hope to see you there.

Wisconsin is such a gem this time of year, and I love your National Parks goal (I'm totally with you on the overpacking, especially when unpredictable weathers involved)
