Yellowstone Reflections

Yellowstone Thermal Pools near sunset by Jeanne Selep June 2024

In June 2024 I visited Yellowstone National Park with my daughter as we pursed the goal of seeing all the National Parks.

Yellowstone Grand Prismatic Overlook by Jeanne Selep June 2024

Late in the day we were near Yellowstone's Grand Prismatic Spring overlook when the mosquitos chased us away and we decided to end adventuring for the day and go eat dinner.

But then - as we drove away from the Fairy Falls trailhead that leads to the overlook, we noticed the sun backlit the steam rising from the Midway Geyser Basin, and we spent the next hour exploring as the sun descended.

As the water, steam, sun and clouds moved, the view and the reflections changed.  Water constantly flows over the travertine terraces, (small steps formed by mineral deposits), making the sunlight sparkle and shimmer.

Steam rises from the hot springs and changes with the slightest breeze, and the wind was blowing as we walked.  All the movement made the landscape quite mesmerizing to watch.

Yellowstone has a reputation of being "alive" with all the movement, and I agree.

I hope you enjoy some of my best photos from that magical hour.

OH wow! These photos are just beautiful! Friends of ours are at Yellowstone this week and I have loved seeing the photos from their trip too. It has definitely made me move Yellowstone further up my list as we too have been trying (very slowly!) to see all the national parks.

Oh, wonderful! These are great photos of Yellowstone National Park, the colors and lighting there. Since we come from Europe, we have unfortunately only seen a fraction of the NPs so far, and Yellowstone has not been one of them yet. I hope we can do it one day...
All the best, Traude

Magical is the right word, the reflection of the sky is beautiful and not an everyday occurrence (the word unique could be appropriate). Apparently it is not entirely safe either,
I think I read that some kind of hot mud explosion took place there about 2 days ago? Many people were frightened, the wooden walkway was partially destroyed and the area was closed off as a result?
