Mount Rainier Sunset from the Air

Mount Rainier near sunset from airplane by Jeanne Selep
Image 1: Mount Rainier from the Air

Returning from a trip to Seattle, Washington State, (USA), I took an eastbound flight near sunset.  The timing ended up being perfect for catching these sunset images of Mount Rainier from the airplane.

Wisconsin River from Overlook
Image 2: Mount Rainier.

The clouds were lower than Mount Rainier's peak, and made the view seem like a fantasy landscape.  There is another mountain peak on the right in the photo, barely visible, that I only noticed when reviewing my photos.  Maybe Mount Saint Helen?

The changing sunset as the plane raced forward allowed me the telephoto view, above, of Mount Rainier at sunset.

Image 4: Smoke from airplane

The same sunset lit up these different "clouds".  Smoke?

Unfortunately I confirmed it was smoke when I saw a forest fire from the air, a new first for me.  Sadness followed a wonderful view.

Image 6 is about 3 minutes after Image 1, showing the colors had really changed.  Also, now another peak is visible on the left.  Perhaps Mount Adams?

I had pointed out Mount Rainer to two 20-30 somethings sitting next to me, and also the forest fire.  What resulted was a fantastic four hour conversation that ranged on topics far and wide.  It was one of the best flight experiences - despite the forest fire.

The two left me with this quote which I wrote down -

"Sharing tea with a stranger
is one of life's true delights"

- from The Last Airbender.

Notes: I tried to keep the colors true to the photos taken as I remember them and as the camera recorded them on September 25, 2025.  The coloration in Image 4 and 5 are due to the sunset coloring the clouds.  Mount Rainier is 14,411 feet high; Mount Saint Helen is now 8634 feet; Mount Adams is 12276 feet high.  I'm not at all positive that the other mountains are correctly identified, let me know if you can identify them.

Oh wow! What amazing photos, your view was amazing! So sad to see the forest fire though.

Such beautiful images of Mount Rainier! When I was growing up we lived in Seattle for four years and we had a view of Mount Rainier from our living room window. It was stunning and my mom's favorite thing about the house! Now there are other homes nearby that obscure the view but we'll always have that memory! Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos. A frequently enjoyed sight, during my years as a Vancouver WA resident. Of course not from that altitude...

This was the only view of Mr. Rainier we saw leaving Seattle after a 6 day stay. Clouds were constantly over that way, despite some really nice sunshiney days. I remember it was July 4 and we saw fireworks when flying across the country.
Thanks for the lovely reminder of that stunning view!!! Sandi

Wow those clouds around Mr. Rainier are incredible! That is much too bad about the forest fire though.
