Mosaic-ing a 3d sphere takes a lot more time then you think it should. The surface area of a sphere is basically 4 times the area of a circle with the same diameter. So a flat stepping stone with the same diameter as a sphere uses only 1/4 the amount of material, and dramatically less time.
Mosaic Bowling Ball details |
Mosaic notes: I "roughed up" the bowling ball with sandpaper before I started gluing the china to it. On this bowling ball project I used mastic to glue the china pieces to the bowling ball, which is one of the reasons it is falling apart now. I now know that mastic doesn't hold up outside. I now use clear silicon caulk to glue the china pieces down, and then I grout with sanded grout over the china - Sanded grout is better for outside mosaics. And I seal the grout of any project that is going to be outside with grout sealer after the project is done. I bring the bowling balls inside once there will be frost or snow outside, but I have other projects (a bird bath, and a table) that stay outside year round.
The birds are named! Fortune and Cookie were made from China (in the US) |
In a previous post on my mosaic birds, I asked for suggestions on naming my birds. From reader input, Fortune and Cookie are what I named the two birds. They are made from china...

Love this, it is so creative :)
This is so pretty - what a clever idea! :) #KCACOLS
How creative! I love it.
My parents were so artistic. I took a class with my mother where we did mosaics with broken auto windshield safety glass if I remember correctly. It was painted different colours and the pieces made a fun lamp shade. - Margy
This is such a great idea - I've never seen anything like it. I'm sure my parents would love one in their garden. #DreamTeamLinky
The creations are so beautiful! Thanks for sharing. Many blessings to you!
What a lovely, unique idea. Yes, it did bowl me over. :) Beautiful

What a brilliant project. Love the colours of the china used. #KCACOLS
This is a wonderful idea for garden art! I wouldn't have thought about using a bowling ball. I'll have to keep that in mind if I see any balls at a thrift store!

Lovely! Mosaic Garden Art is one of my featured posts on this week's Encouraging Hearts and Home Link up and Blog Hop. Stop by and say hello! Pinned.
Love, love, LOVE your upcycled bowling balls!!! What a fun project... I have a TON of broken china saved and I did use some back about 8-10 years ago when I had surgery on my foot (bad plantar fasciitis) to make roofs/rooves for little birdhouses. They turned out great and I made them custom for each of my friends in the tea group I was in. I think we sold my old bowling ball... But, if not!!! :D
Happy 4th to you! Happy to feature your post at Share Your Style #262 this week,
Hugs,
Barb :)

Fine china on a bowling ball... now that's one epic juxtaposition! This is really gorgeous and such a cool way to hold onto something special that may have broken along the way...
Thanks for bringing this to DIY Salvaged Junk Projects... featured it in 534 this weekend!
