Image 1: Vintage Halloween Pumpkin and Ghost Tumbler |
Haunting estate sales, rummage sales and resale shops allows me to find occasional fun items that become family legends. I once found six of the pumpkin and ghost tumblers above. They became family favorites, used constantly year round. Some of the glasses broke, and since I can't replace them, I eventually put them out of sight and only bring the remaining two out around Halloween. I gave one of the glasses to my daughter when she got an apartment, to remind her of home and make her smile. (She insists Halloween is her favorite holiday).

The batty glasses above became a favorite as well. I only found two of them. The glass is stronger, but the black bats don't hold up well in the dishwasher, and are now more of "charcoal" instead of black. I now think of the glasses as "ghost bats" - SPOOKY!
Dishwashers can "etch" glassware and wear off images, and some glasses wear much more significantly. I should have hand washed these, but the dishwasher damage has been done, and the kids still like them, so I will bring them out each year, but they will still go in the dishwasher.

Using vintage glassware regularly does take a toll on the glassware - Glasses break, and that's OK. Vintage glassware frequently arrives at a resale shop rarely used or unused, and "using up" a glass is a green option I like. It also teaches the kids to handle glass with more care - (maybe?).
When the kids were young, I was so happy to have matching glassware. I gleefully ditched the children's plastic as soon as they were old enough, good-bye plastic sippy cups! Then came the next battle. Every time someone wanted a drink, a new glass would be out, and on a hot day you could fill the top of the dishwasher with dozens of glasses used that day. I started trying to get the kids to use the same glass all day, which led to needing unique glasses so they could tell the glassware apart. Does this happen in other families??? So much for matching glassware!
This post is a tribute to these favorite glasses, in case they don't survive the Halloween season.
Happy Halloween! |

ReplyDeleteI am a vintage hunter and LOVE to collect vintage Halloween and Christmas items - I've never seen vintage halloween glassware - I am definitely envious and oh those little glass pumpkin LOVE LOVE LOVE
ReplyDeleteLove these vintage glasses, they remind me of ones we had years ago - I seem to remember we had some glasses that had started as jelly jars, Peanuts characters maybe? Ugh, the memory is the first to go!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your submission to WQ Wednesday Quotes. The post is a perfect fit, and I love the ghostly glasses and the story about how the kids used them throughout the years. Great post. Next time, please include just one post link in the InLinkz box. I don't think I made that clear, so no worries for this time.
ReplyDeleteHave a great Halloween and enjoy the glasses. :)
Your vintage glassware reminds me of some that we had growing up! Though I have never seen these two exact patterns before. They are really cute.
ReplyDeleteThose are such fun Halloween designs. I enjoy vintage shopping and coming across glasses from my childhood. Thanks for sharing at the #HomeMattersParty!
ReplyDeleteI love vintage objects and these glasses are great.
ReplyDeleteI love your halloween glasses. We have a lot of glasses from when one of my sons worked as a bartender and was given promotional glasses.
ReplyDeleteSuch cute Halloween things. I haven't even gotten my Halloween stuff out of the attic yet, so I guess I won't bother now since it's already October 28! lol. Maybe next year. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your weekend coffee share. Fun Halloween-themed glasses. Who can resist milk and cookies?
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of when I was younger. We used to have all of the Looney Toons Glasses. I didn't have any idea that a dishwasher would do that to them and will have to make sure my daughter know-she just got a dishwasher. Thank you for sharing your post at the Senior Salon Pit Stop! I'm excited to be featuring you at Monday’s party. Congrats! Pinned
ReplyDeleteHugs,
