Image 1: Bow Lake in fall, Banff National Park, Alberta Canada |
On
vacation, I always want the weather to be great for photos, but nature
doesn't always cooperate. On the fall day in late September when I went past Bow Lake in Banff
National Park, Canada, the day was gray with swirling clouds and light snow.
|

The view was still beautiful, despite the clouds. A light snow had dusted the mountains, accentuating the textures of the mountains' rocks and the large talus (rock debris) piles. In winter, or a heavy snow, the mountain would be mostly white. Without snow, the rock's textures are less pronounced.

My
photos from that day show an atmospheric and somewhat
dreamy mountain and reflection. The clouds moved below the mountain tops and the light changed from time to time as the sun tried to peek through. The misty shot makes the mountain look
deceptively small - the tiny band of green trees on the other side of
the lake are forests of tall towering evergreen trees.

The snow emphasized the huge talus piles across the lake. If I had ideas to go climbing (I don't), the huge amount of talus makes me think climbing here would be super dangerous. Canadian Highway 93 has pull-off spots, from where some of these photos were taken. Avalanche warnings are posted all along Highway 93. These tall peaks seem to be crumbly. We walked on some minor areas of talus, making me think that walking on the other side of the lake would not be my idea of safe.

Image 5: Paddle boarding in the Mountains |
A lucky opportunity allowed my daughter to paddle board on Bow Lake.
|
Image 6: Paddle boarding on Bow Lake |
She wasn't dressed for paddle boarding, but she's skilled enough to know she was unlikely to fall into the icy water; and what to do if she did fall into the water. (So don't try this on your own!) If you look closely at the large version of her photo, you will notice it is lightly snowing. Considering my daughter was paddle boarding in the mountains, while it was snowing, over icy cold water, I perhaps should have been more worried than I was.

She said looking in the water's reflection from the middle of the lake was stunning, something she'll never forget. I can only imagine it - mountains and clouds reflected below, all around, and the real mountains rising up in front of her. The lake was mirror smooth, but the camera caught more ripple detail, in the same way camera's can capture drops of water in a splash or waterfall that normally our eyes would not see.

The photos above and below show the mirror-like lake reflection I remember from most of the day. Bow Lake is known for the fantastic reflection of the mountain faces behind it. When you stand on near the shore, the mountain's reflection seems to fill the lake. The lake has intense blue-green water in the right light conditions, which sometimes adds subtle color to the reflection.

The picture below was taken very near Bow Lake. For a moment the sun started to break through the clouds, and I snapped "a cool sight". But a camera can't capture the range of vision our eyes can see, and so the clouds are are grayer in the photo, the sun was blinding white, and the mountains and snow were less monochrome. This photo only gives a memory of the moment. But I included it here anyway.

Background notes:
Bow Lake is located in Alberta Canada's large Banff National Park. Bow Lake is about 60 miles (95 km) North of the City of Banff along Highway 93, or 25 miles (40km) north of Lake Louise.

Here in Wisconsin, we just had a real snow storm and very cold sub zero weather (below 0 degrees Fahrenheit), and it seems to be cold across much of the USA, so Stay Warm!

Wow, how beautiful! I have visited Banff and it is gorgeous. Your daughter looks amazing on the water!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful reflections.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos and how cool that your daughter got to paddle in such majestic surroundings. Thank you for your weekend coffee share.
ReplyDeleteHi..thank you for visiting my Nature Notes meme. You left a comment but did not link up if that is what you wanted to do, but no pressure..Lovely post with some very dramatic scenery..Michelle
ReplyDeleteI love visiting Banff. It's so pretty.
ReplyDeleteAmazingly beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a beautiful place.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful photos! And I envy your daughter's skill on the board..
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning photos! Looking at the pics of your daughter paddleboarding, I struggle to imagine having good enough balance to do that. Even when I was a teenager, I don't think I could have stayed upright on one of those things.
ReplyDeleteWhat fantastic pictures! I wouldn't want to fall in tho!!!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous captures!
ReplyDelete...Bow Lake is a gorgeous destination! Your daughter is a brave and talented young lady! Take care and have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteI've been there! It's indeed a gorgeous place. I didn't get photos like these, though--wow! Stunning. I'm visiting from the Crazy Little Lovebirds Link Party.
ReplyDeleteSpectacular photos of the mountain and its reflection in the lake. I love how the snow accentuates the structure of the mountain.
ReplyDeleteKudos to your daughter for her paddleboarding skills. Out there standing and not the slightest ripple from keeping her balance. I still worry about her if she fell in such cold water.
Hello :=)
ReplyDeleteThe beautiful photos of Bow Lake are fabulous. The reflection of the mountain does seem to cover the whole expanse of the calm still water. Your daughter seems unafraid to paddle and has a good balance,..but just looking at her photos makes me anxious, but I guess she is used to it! Your photos of her on the lake are gorgeous. They all are.
All the best,
Sonjia.
I have never been to Canada, but now I want to put it on my bucket list. Those pictures are amazing!
ReplyDeleteStopping in from Senior Salon Pit Stop.

Your photos are stunning. All I have to say about your daughter paddle boarding is WOW! She made for a great subject. Thank you for linking up.
ReplyDeleteWow a very impressive scenery. Looks great. But I think I will never get there...too far away from here. And your daughter is without any fear -paddeling on ice-cold water.
ReplyDeleteHave a good time and all the best

Hi Jeanne! Thanks for stopping by my blog! Oh I love this post on Banff!! I live In PEI, Canada....and hubby and I can't wait to vacation again in Banff!! We had the best vacation there...we toured Jasper, Lake Louise, Edmonton & Calgary. It's definitely a gorgeous part of Canada!!
ReplyDeleteWow...those are stunning. Haha..I do okay on a paddle board, but pretty sure I'd get soaked somehow...We hope to visit Banff sometime this year. I'll have to mark this lake down as one to see.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous images!
ReplyDeleteBow Lake looks lovely even on a grey day. :)
The view is very relaxing.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely amazing and so awesome that your daughter had the privilege to paddle board on the late.

ReplyDeleteStunning shots - Thanks for linking up and for sharing your snaps with #MySundaySnapshot.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful place and lovely shots! Thanks for taking part in the "My Sunday Best" meme.
ReplyDeleteDear Jeanne,
ReplyDeleteeven if the sky was cloudy, you managed to get wonderful photos that reflect powerful nature and a special form of peace. They look a bit like painted. The photos of your (very brave) daughter on the paddle board also look very artistic and somehow nostalgic, despite the modern yellow board.
All the best from Austria, Traude
PS: It's definitely a good idea to come to Vienna again and spend more time 😉.
I find your pictures amazing! And the weather was perfect for such a winter landscape. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Jeanne! These photos - not to mention your daughter - are gorgeous!! I want to go there! Sometimes I think cloudy days make for surprisingly better photos outside. Just fabulous, these are.
