Spring Easter Hutch with Bunnies |
My recent Easter china hutch arrangement focused on rabbits and bunnies. It featured two different sets of hand-painted china: the blue and white "Dedham rabbit" china, and eight green Shafford plates. I find the green and blue china combination a fun alternative to my usual pastel spring arrangements.
Reproduction Dedham China from the Potting Shed |
Dedham pottery was originally created from the 1890's to 1943, and at antique sales a single plate can easily sell for over $100. My blue and white dishes are reproductions, re-released in the 1990's, but still individually hand-painted.
Dedham rabbit reproduction plates from the Potting Shed |
I have admired the antique Dedham china for years at antique shows, so I quickly bought the reproduction pieces when I saw them at an estate sale.
Dedham rabbit detail: simple shapes and brush strokes |
I love the way each rabbit is created with a few quick brush strokes. The dark lines that look like cracks throughout the Dedham pieces are called "crazing" and are intentional, in both the original pieces and the reproductions.
Dedham China has "crazing" all over each piece |
Some people may not appreciate reproductions, but I think reproductions allow new generations to see, touch, learn about, and learn to value the original antique pieces.
Green Shafford Rabbit patch plate |
The eight green Shafford plates feature a high relief of bunnies and vegetables. The green painting is applied quickly and gives each plate differences.
Shafford Rabbit Patch plate detail |
Some of the bunnies were painted with more care, some hardly at all. This is one of the best rabbits.
The eight green plates are labeled Rabbit Patch from Shafford (MCMLXXXIX) from 1989. They were probably never meant to be used for eating.

Other novelty plates and decorative pieces fill out the hutch arrangement.
Miscellaneous spring china |
The cream colored plate in the middle above is Copeland Spode, labeled Bermuda Flowers (the relief pattern?) Copeland Spode, and Morning glory (the colored design in the middle of the plate). The plates on either side are labeled American Atelier, Rose Toile. There are 4 different designs with that same label.
As I mentioned, usually the Easter hutch is very pastel - see below. Click on the photo to see this arrangement.

ReplyDeleteOh Wow! I just saw that you have the Schumann Bavaria Reticulated plates! I have been buying the dinner and salad plates, (but not the reticulated ones that I really like) on ebay a few at a time. I plan to do a tablescape in the next few months using them. Will be sure to add a link here when I do.
